Background Info
Driver numbers used to be assigned based on each team's ranking in the previous year's driver and constructor championships. A rule change in 2014 allowed drivers to select their own number and keep it for the entirety of their Formula 1 career.
A driver can choose any number between 2 and 99, as long as it's not already in use. When a driver leaves the sport, their number is reserved for two years, preventing any other driver from using it.
The number 1 is reserved for the current reigning champion of Formula 1, although that driver is not required to use it.
As of today, Driver #11 is Cadillac's Sergio Perez, who is from Mexico.
